Women's International Day 2018

Posted on

What is International Women's Day?

International Women's Day seeks to celebrate women's achievements as well to raise awareness for change when it comes to gender equality.

When is it & What is the theme?

This special day falls on March 8 every year. The day is meant to bring together global governments, women organisations, business charities together. The day itself is a filled day of talks, performances, rallies, networking events, and marches.

There are many themes all over the world and the themes are not limited to only one issue or cause. Many women in different countries have claimed their own portion of how they want to celebrate. With that said, the theme for this year's International Women's Day is #PressforProgress. It is a strong call to motivate and unite your friends, colleagues, and whole communities to think, act, and be gender inclusive.

What are the International Women's Day origin?

The earliest observance was held in New York on February 28, 1909 that was organised by the Socialist Party of America. Within a year later, Socialist representatives proposed there be an International Women's Day which was inspired by the march and demonstration in New York. It was finally agreed by the delegates that the international day should be formed as part of a strategy to promote equal rights for women and their suffrage.

Why do we celebrate it?

The original aim of International Women's Day was to achieve gender equality for women. The Gender Pay gap still exists  where women earn up to 14% less than men. This story is also important around the world for a number of reasons including the lack of women's representation in politics and business.
